FBLA-PBL Experience

August 2015

First membership year in FBLA

I first joined FBLA in my sophomore year at Fossil Ridge High school in Fort Collins, Colorado. I was invited to join the leadership team and became the Business Achievement Awards & Lettering Manager. I competed in Digital Video Production and Business Communications, placing at the state level. I began working on the Business Achievement Award levels and by senior year, I completed the highest level, which is the AMERICA level and received all four pins. In PBL, I hope to complete all levels of the Career and Membership Achievement Program (CMAP), which is the equivalent of the BAAs.

FBLA Officer Elections

Once I started to get the hang of competitions, BAAs, and the other important components of FBLA, I decided to run for State and District Office. I was elected as a District Officer and helped organize the District One Leadership Conference, while also speaking on stage from the script. While I was not elected for State Office at this time, I believe now that I needed to be more outgoing and to push myself further so that I could become a better leader and take more risks. I learned from this experience, and was elected to serve as Chapter President, Chapter Secretary and a State Selection Committee Officer to choose the following year's State Officer Team.

First membership year in PBL

Transitioning from FBLA to PBL, was definitely both a positive and learning experience, since the two divisions have their differences and similarities. I chose to attend Colorado Mesa University mostly for the reason that their chapter was the most well-known in the state of Colorado. I ran for and was elected as the Chapter Director of Membership. In our chapter, we have a point system. This means that if a member achieves 20-40 hours of service dedicated to PBL, whether that means attending meetings, events, creating marketing material, etc., then their trip to state and nationals is paid for by the chapter. I completed about 86 hours the first year. Sophomore year came around and I was elected as Chapter Vice President and then stepped up to serve as Chapter President. At the State Leadership Conference, I competed in Social Media Challenge, Public Speaking, and Networking Concepts. I truly believe I have grown stronger as an individual, as my peers across Colorado elected me to serve as their Colorado State President. So far, this is the proudest accomplishment I have achieved.
